Did you know, according to the US Census Bureau (Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2012 http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/2012/tables/12s0131.pdf), in marriages starting during the period 1985 – 1989, only 66% reach their 15th anniversary? Yet what is it we focus on when preparing for the wedding day?
- The exorbitant wedding dress – often in the thousands of dollars
- The overly expensive wedding ceremony & reception – often in the tens of thousands of dollars
- The insanely expensive honeymoon vacations
There is one simple solution to marriage longevity. I propose we take the money we use for wedding dresses, the wedding ceremony, reception and honeymoon and put it all into a “save our marriage” fund. OK what, prey tell, is that save our marriage fund use for? — Counseling! Skip the honeymoon and spend 2 days the week after the wedding to go to counseling. Then spend 1 day per week in counseling for the next 5 years. Then reduce that to 1 day per month until the 20th wedding annivesary. Then reduce it to twice per year until the 5oth anniversary. Let’s see how that goes? Who’s game?
